Introduction

The Chicano Moratorium was a watershed moment of the Chicano Movement and an important part of the peace movement. It was the largest minority protest against the war and the largest Mexican American political event until the 1990s. It was a peaceful, joyous, diverse family event until attacked by police and sheriffs. It was but on grassroots organizing by the peace movement and by the Chicano Movement for social justice. It was followed by continued organizing and mobilization that added to its legacy.
